CREATIVE MORNINGS AUSTIN

Ami has been drawing @ Creative Mornings in Austin since 2012, first attending purely for the inspiration–the Creative Mornings folks often reposting his imagery as part of their social content stream.
He now draws for the organization in an official capacity & they continue to repost his images but now they also present the guest speakers & musicians with his original drawings as a thank you for the inspiration they bring each month.

Creative Mornings 10th Anniversary Party Group Mural Creation at Fierce Whiskers Distillery
To help celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Creative Mornings Austin at their birthday party, I created a group mural experience to celebrate some of my favorite moments in #CMATX history! Since I have been sketching pretty much since the beginning it was tough pulling out my favorite details, but tried to highlight some of the frequent contributors, pivotal moments as well as my personal favorites. Included of course are organizers Ben Thomas, Ann Blocker and Brian Thompson, as well as my fellow documenters, Manny Panda and Marty Robbins, and of course our champions of caffeination, CUVEE Coffee. I included speakers such as China Smith, James Victore, David Ansel, Professor Dumpster (aka Jeff Smith), Chas Moore, and Laurie Frick. I also included some of our amazing musical guests (who generally played the earliest morning sets of their careers with us) like Nick and Paige and Henry Invisble—also CMATX music bookers for a while—Graham Reynolds and Mama Duke.

I began by collaging together pieces from my past live illustrations and then created a live drawing from it, which I then transferred to a primed 4x6’ piece of plywood. We set up the piece at the entrance of the party and provided attendees with Posca markers and a prompt to begin coloring in the shapes created by intersecting lines with their own personal flair.

The participation was glorious and I loved seeing the creativity individuals brought to the details of the painting. We almost finished it at the party, so I brought it back to one last Creative Mornings to get it finished up!

My 42x72" painting from June's Creative Mornings Austin on the subject of "Wonder" hosted by Red Velvet Events. Speaker Christian Helms of Helms Workshop showed off some work and amazing 1940's lunatic-squirrel Binaca ad he managed to get hung in his living room as he talked about how a struggle with a debilitating bout of Lyme Disease helped him draw inspiration those little moments of wonder that he encounters every day. Austin guitarist John Pointer opened with a rousing fret tapping performance, the folks from Toy Prints got their 30 seconds to talk about their program of empowering high risk kids by teaching them how to create their own toys, yours truly plugged the Gonzo Viz workshops and Maddie Huey delivered the manifesto. Pineapple balloon sculpture by the always amazing The Balloon Collective.
